This research aims to find out the influences of pronunciation instruction on students’ overall speaking ability. The data were gained from 20 ELT students using pre-test in which the instruction asked them to tell a picture strip story which obtained sounds that was being problem for Turkish English students. The post-test was conducted after 5 week of pronunciation instruction to discover the influence of pronunciation instruction on students’ pronunciation skills. A questionnaire was also distributed             at the end of the 5th week period to reveal students’ self-perception of pronunciation. The findings show that students’ awareness of the sounds of English has been helped by pronunciation instruction. The result proposes that teachers of English should have deep knowledge and a command of the sound system of English since it is an important skill. Thus, pronunciation classes should be integrated in the curriculum of institution focusing on language training for teachers.

This research provides the proof of teaching integrated listening and speaking to help students improving their communicative competence orally. The integration of both skills is because they cannot completely standalone without mutual interaction. The design of this research was experiment with pre-posttest and certain various tasks. The data were obtained from 180 students from preparatory school of Hacettepe University, Turkey and then analyzed using t-test. The result reveals that students taught using integrated skill are more successful than students taught in separated skills. The result also shows that students’ success is because of the implementation of information-gap tasks of integrated listening and speaking skill.

Improving the speaking ability in English: The students’ perspective

In this era, which mass communication, propaganda, and media have a significant role, the students’ perspective is very much important. Besides, the students and teachers are supposed to empower each other to reach the goals, which is students’ good ability in speaking skill. This research used stratified random sampling procedure on (20 each male & female) studying at the 1st and 2nd year level. The data was gained through questionnaire in fifteen items developed from literature review and discussion with the experts. The collected data was tabulated in the form of counting frequencies, and then it was analyzed through percentages. The result shows that most of the students complained about lacking time in improving speaking ability in the classroom. In addition, various practices were not given to them to improve their speaking skill. Also, some students could not speak English because of fear of their teacher and all students would be shy because their friends’ laughing for the mistake.

Raising up speaking anxiety issue in English Language Teaching (ELT) is upright deal. However, the studies discussing how teachers can solve this problem are fairly few. Thus, this study aims to investigate the integrated spontaneous speech activities in helping students to diminish their English speaking ability. This study used mixed method design which included qualitative and quantitative data. The setting of this study was in ELT department at a private university in Istanbul, Turkey. The data were taken from 12 freshman year students and obtained using questionnaire to measure the students’ pre and post anxiety level. In addition, various types of speaking activities were provided by the researcher. Moreover, activities reflection from students and focus group interview were conducted. The finding shows that students’ anxiety level decreases. They claim that their anxiety decrease when they are unprepared. However, the lack of number of sample is considered in generalizing the result.

This research explores EFL students’ Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety (FLSA). This also investigates the possibility of their reasons on FLSA and solution to it. The data were gained from 147 Turkish students at the English preparatory program of a state university by using questionnaire to discover their FLSA based on each proficiency level. The findings expose that students’ FLSA is in moderate level. Besides, FLSA tends to be higher for female students. Also, students become more anxious when they communicate with native speaker than with their classmates. Regarding to students’ proficiency, FLSA does not rely on it. Then, this research decides that contributing in authentic context like study abroad should be encouraged to EFL students and attracting both gender in addressing FLSA is more contributive to language development and students’ communicative competence.

Manusia Pendusta

Sang lisan dengan ringannya mengeluarkan kata-kata.
Begitupun manusia mengucap janji dengan mudahnya.
Tak sadarkah bahwa kelak kan diminta pembuktiannya.
Seolah pikirmu itu hanya akan berlalu saja.

Semalam padaku kau berkata iya.
Esoknya perbuatanmu menunjukkan hal yang berbeda.
Begitu mudahnya dengan janji engkau lupa.
Berbagai dalih dan alasan kau jadikan tameng dan senjata.

Semua butuh proses alasan yang pertama.
Semua butuh waktu alasan berikutnya.
Lalu apalagi yang akan kau bilang selanjutnya?
Begitu terus berulang sampai seterusnya.

Lelah sudah aku melihatmu terus mendusta.
Tak lagi ingin mendengarmu membual belaka.
Lanjutkan saja tingkahmu jika itu membuatmu bahagia.
Tapi maaf jika aku harus mengakhiri sampai di sini saja.

Orang Ketiga (Bagian 3 – Aku)

Setelah aku berpikir sekian lama.
Aku tersadarkan oleh warasnya logika.
Ternyata aku terjebak dalam suasana.
Kenyamanan yang melenakan seluruh jiwa.

Aku berkaca dan melihat diriku ini siapa.
Tak pantas darimu aku mengharap apa-apa.
Terlalu hina jika aku kau bandingkan dengan dia.
Karena aku bukanlah orang seperti dia yang berharga.

Dia yang selalu berusaha menjaga firman Tuhannya.
Sedangkan aku? rutin membacanya saja sulitnya luar biasa.
Jika hal itu saja bisa dia jaga, apalagi hanya sekedar membuatmu bahagia.
Tentu itu bukanlah hal yang sulit untuk dilakukannya.

Ku harapkan semoga dia lelaki yang tepat menemanimu hingga masa tua.
Dan semoga pertemanan kita abadi sampai di surga.
Meskipun terkadang kau dengannya aku tak rela.
Tapi aku sadar, bahwa di sini aku hanyalah orang ketiga.

Sekian lama kujalani hidup bersamamu berdua.
Menjaga komunikasi di dunia nyata dan social media.
Tak terasa muncul getaran-getaran yang tak biasa.
Seolah menunggu untuk disampaikan kepadamu adinda.

Stop! itu bukanlah yang diinginkan oleh logika.
Bukankah tujuannya hanya berteman saja.
Mengapa sekarang perasaanmu yang aku minta?
Bodohnya aku jika sampai terjerumus pada lubang yang sama.

Lambat laun kepadaku kau mulai terbuka.
Tentang siapa yang dalam hatimu berkuasa.
Masa lalu yang masih kau simpan membuatku sedikit kecewa.
Setelah sekian lama aku masih tak menyangka.

Kukira kau akan berhenti mengharapkan dirinya.
Ternyata di jauh di lubuk hatimu masih terbesit asa.
Meskipun kau berdalih tak ingin ada luka.
Namun justru entah mengapa saat itu hatiku berduka.

Untuk mengatur atau melarangmu pun aku tak bisa.
Karena bagimu aku bukan siapa-siapa.
Dan bahkan kita berdua bukan apa-apa.
Karena di hatimu masih ada orang ketiga.

Seorang gadis kini telah datang menyapa.
Membuat hidupku sedikit lebih berwarna.
Padahal banyak orang mendamba.
Mengapa aku yang dipilihnya?

Perlahan pesonamu mengaburkan dia.
Dia yang selalu kusebut dalam doa.
Dia yang sudah aku kenal lebih lama.
Dia yang sudah membuatku terbelenggu asmara.

Sudah lebih dari empat bulan perasaanku padanya bersemayam di dada.
Kata ilmuwan berarti itu tandanya jatuh cinta.
Lalu datang sosokmu yang masuk ke hidupku tiba-tiba.
Mengusik perasaan yang sudah lama bertahta.

Siapa gerangan dirimu wahai anak muda?
Kupanggil begitu karena kau lebih muda dari aku dan dia.
Kau yang selalu menawarkan tawa dan bahagia.
Dengan sikap sederhana berbalut manja.

Senyummu yang semanis gula membuat aku terpesona.
Tawamu yang jenaka bahkan bisa menghapus duka.
Keunikanmu membuatku kehabisan kata-kata.
Namun sayangnya, kau hanyalah orang ketiga.

Wahai hati yang selalu dirindu.
Kudengar hari ini kau kembali ke ibu.
Tak ada sambutan musik ataupun lagu.
Pun di sana tak kan kau temukan aku.
Bukan hanya sekedar karena malu.
Tapi juga tak ingin engkau tahu.

Sabarlah hingga kelak hadir “Sang Waktu”
Ketika dua keluarga menjadi satu.
Dalam balutan romantisme nan syahdu.
Semoga Tuhan menjaga kita selalu.
Hingga tiba saat yang ditunggu.
